PSV – Ajax

We are heading our attention to the Dutch Eredivisie, where PSV hosts Ajax in the big derby of the league. This will happen on Sunday afternoon. Let’s see.

PSV had a perfect start of the new season, winning all of their five matches played so far. They are leading the standings with 15 points and an impressive goal difference of 21 goals scored and just 3 goals conceded. PSV are really flying under the management of their young manager Mark van Bommel.

In the previous round PSV enjoyed a crushing 7-0 win during the visit to ADO Den Haag. Hirving Lozano and Gaston Pereiro scored braces, while Luuk de Jong, Erick Gutierrez and Steven Bergwijn also added goals for the win.

But during the week PSV had some tough moments against Barcelona in the Champions League, suffering a heavy 0-4 defeat at the Camp Nou in the Catalan capital. PSV were just outperformed in this game, but this was not really surprising, we shall say.

Ajax are 2nd in the league standings with 13 points won so far, just 2 points behind the leader PSV. For them this is a chance to overtake PSV at the top of the league.

Ajax started the season with a draw against Heracles, which was followed by four consecutive wins. In the previous round Ajax enjoyed a 3-0 win against Groningen at home. The veteran Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored a brace, while the new signing Dusan Tadic also scored a goal.

During the week Ajax had a game in the Europa League, achieving another 3-0 win, this time against AEK Athens.

This is the big derby of Dutch football. PSV and Ajax are the two major contenders for the title in the Eredivisie, so this game shall give us a lot of answers.
