Rapid Wien – Salzburg

Rapid Wien meets Salzburg in the final game of the Austrian Cup. The game is going to be played at the Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

Salzburg are arguably the big favourite to win this match. They won the league in Austria with a huge advantage in front of Austria Wien, which once again proved that they are currently the best team in the country. They have won the title with 18 points advantage, which is really impressive achievement.

Rapid Wien on the other hand ended their campaign in the Bundesliga at 5th place. This is not what Rapid’s fans hoped for, but they could still dream about winning the Cup. Something which would make Rapid’s season successful.

We should note that Rapid Wien are the second most successful club in the history of the tournament. They have won the Cup 14 times so far. Only Austria Wien have managed to win the trophy more times – 27. For the last time Rapid won the trophy in 1995. In 2005 they have played in the final for last time, but losing against Austria.

As for Salzburg, they are the current holders of the trophy. They have won it four times so far. All of their triumphs are achieved in the last five years – 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This is not surprising as they are the most dominant team in Austria in the recent years.

This is a very classical battle between a club with rich traditions and a club which domiantes Austrian football because of money. Can history and traditions beat money? This is the big question before this game. We should know the answer very soon.
