Gojowczyk had to play in the qualifiers, before entering the main draw. That’s why his win in Metz was a big surprise. In the first round he faced Norbert Gombos from Slovakia and enjoyed a tough win in three sets – 3-6 7-6(4) 6-3.
His next test was a serious one, because he had to face the well known French player Gilles Simon. But here Gojowczyk was once again merciless, winning the match in two – 6-4 7-6(4).
During the 1/4-finals the German faced the Romanian Marius Copil. Once again he demonsrated great form and won convincingly – 6-2 6-4.
Gojowczyk’s biggest test came in the 1/2-finals, where he had to face Mischa Zverev from Germany. Gojowczyk won the first set with 6-3. In the beginning of the second set, Zverev injured himself and he had to stop his participation in the tournament. This meant that Gojowczyk will play in the final against Benoit Paire.
As for Paire, he started his participation in Metz against Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece in the first round. A match he won with 6-2 6-4.
In the second round Benot Paire once again enjoyed a successful match. He faced Marcel Granollers from Spain and won the match in three – 7-6(9) 3-6 7-6(8).
