Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands won the WTA tournament in Gstaad. In the direct clash for the trophy she defeated Anett Kontaveit from Estonia in three sets – 6-3 3-6 6-1.
Bertens was seeded as №2 in the tournament and she totally justified her position as a favourite for the trophy.
In the first round Bertens defeated Aleksandra Krunic from Serbia in two sets – 6-3 6-1. In the 1/8-finals Bertens was merciless against Anna Zaja from Germany, eliminating her also in two sets – 6-4 6-2.
In the 1/4-finals the Dutch player met the №5 seeded Johanna Larsson from Sweden. Another win in two sets (6-4 6-4) meant that Bertens is reaching the semifinals.
In a direct clash for the final, Kiki Bertens defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa from Spain after a 6-1 in the first set and retirement by Soler-Espinosa.
Her opponent in the final Anett Kontaveit started her participation in the tournament with a match against Martina Trevisan from Italy. Kontaveit won in two sets – 6-1 6-3. In the 1/8-finals she had to deal with Anna Kalinskaya from Russia, which she did in three sets – 6-4 4-6 6-4.
The Estonian reached the 1/2-finals after a win over the №6 seeded Carina Witthoeft from Germany with 6-2 6-4. Kontaveit qualified for the final after a 6-4 6-1 win over Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic.
In the final Bertens and Kontaveit showed similar quality in the first two sets, after which the result was even – 1-1. But in the final third set Kiki Bertens showed great strenght and overpowered her opponent with the decisive 6-1. Which meant that Kiki Bertens is the new champion in Gstaad.
